Teaching Young Learners: the challenge

The purpose of this site

Over the last few years I've had the chance to talk to and observe many teachers teaching young learners. What's struck me the most is how increadibly difficult this can be, especially if the teacher has had little experience with this age group. Being a good young learner teacher is a very challenging  task and the more support teachers can get from more experienced colleagues the better it is. In addition, I also think it's a joy to share aspects of successful young learner classroom practice with colleagues. We learn a lot from this.

There are many coursebooks and resource books on teaching young learners, but the focus of this blog is not on publishers or published material, nor is it about any specific language course or institution. The focus is on pedagogical practices which can make the English language learning experience immensely rewarding for our little ones.

It would be great to hear from you, so that you can share your ideas with all of us. You may want to suggest an idea for a new page, or you may want to write a text for one of the pages and even share some of the work you've been doing with your young learners. Please feel free to drop me a line and share with all of us.

Look forward to hearing from you all.

Comments: I work for Cultura Inglesa in Brazil, which now is training teachers to teach English to young learners in Public Schools. My job along with other colleagues is to train those teachers. The most challenging task for us so far is to show those teachers how to deal with young learners since most of them have never taught YL.
